The Church of San Francisco de Asís in Panajachel dates back to the 16th century when it was constructed by the Franciscan order during the Spanish conquest. Despite earthquakes and restoration efforts, much of its original structure remains intact. The main altar inside is dedicated to San Francisco de Asís, the town’s patron saint. The church was initially used to convert the indigenous population to the Catholic faith.
Iglesia San Francisco is primarily appreciated as an old colonial Catholic church in central Panajachel. Visitors who enjoy architecture, religious art, and local history often consider it worth a short stop, especially because of its connection to community traditions and patron-saint celebrations.
The reviews focus on the building, statues, sculptures, and religious character rather than food, drinks, or visitor amenities. It is best approached as a cultural and architectural landmark rather than an attraction with extensive programming.
Reactions are not universal: while some visitors find the church beautiful and meaningful, a few consider it relatively unremarkable. The experience is therefore strongest for travelers with an interest in local churches, historic architecture, or religious culture.
A beautiful colonial Catholic Church in the heart of the city. Go inside for some beautiful old statues etc. It's certainly not Notre Dame, but it's worth a visit if you like old churches.
