Founded in the Panchoy Valley in 1543, Antigua served as the Spanish colonial capital for more than two centuries. A series of devastating earthquakes in 1773 led authorities to move the capital to present-day Guatemala City, but much of Antigua’s historic character survived. Today, restored colonial buildings stand alongside the ruins of churches, convents and monasteries damaged by centuries of earthquakes.

The city’s historic center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Visitors can explore landmarks including the Santa Catalina Arch, Iglesia de La Merced, San Francisco El Grande, the ruins of the Cathedral of San José and the buildings surrounding Parque Central. Many of Antigua’s former colonial residences have also been transformed into boutique hotels, museums, restaurants and shops.

Antigua is surrounded by some of Guatemala’s most recognizable landscapes. Volcán de Agua rises immediately south of the city, while Acatenango and the active Volcán de Fuego dominate the western horizon. The city is one of the primary starting points for hikes to Acatenango, where overnight expeditions offer extraordinary views of Fuego’s volcanic activity.

Food and coffee are an important part of the Antigua experience. The surrounding highlands are one of Guatemala’s best-known coffee-growing regions, and visitors can tour local coffee farms and learn about cultivation, harvesting and roasting. Within the city, traditional Guatemalan cooking sits alongside an increasingly international dining scene, ranging from street food and local markets to contemporary restaurants and specialty coffee shops.

Antigua is also one of Guatemala’s leading centers for Spanish-language study, artisan workshops and cultural experiences. Travelers can take cooking classes, learn traditional crafts, visit nearby villages, explore local markets or spend weeks studying Spanish while living with a Guatemalan host family.

Semana Santa is Antigua’s most famous annual celebration. During Holy Week, enormous religious processions travel through the historic streets over elaborate alfombras created from colored sawdust, flowers, fruits and other natural materials. The celebration attracts visitors from Guatemala and around the world and represents one of the city’s strongest expressions of religious tradition and community participation.

Antigua also works exceptionally well as a base for exploring central Guatemala. Lake Atitlán, Chichicastenango, Pacaya Volcano, Acatenango, Guatemala City and numerous Maya and highland communities can be reached on day trips or as the next stage of a longer journey.

Despite being one of Guatemala’s most visited destinations, Antigua remains a living city rather than simply a historic attraction. Markets open each morning, students fill its language schools, local families gather around Parque Central, and restaurants and cafés occupy centuries-old buildings. That combination of history, culture, food, natural beauty and everyday Guatemalan life is what makes Antigua a destination worth experiencing rather than simply passing through.
