I’m bummed writing this review. I had heard about Montagu for the past 2 years while living here in Antigua. Many friends have recommended it so I was very excited to finally make the reservation and get a chance to try.
Disappointed is the first word that comes to mind, perhaps that’s my fault for having high expectations. The food was okay. The homemade pasta is nice, but it really isn’t anything special. The black pasta was by far the best of the three we tried as a group and even that wasn’t really unique. The taster appetizer was by far the best thing we had.
The service was subpar. I know service in different countries can be different. I’ve traveled and lived all over so I have a low bar when it comes to good service. But the man felt downright hostile towards us. Like we were intruding on what would be otherwise a nice night for him. We were 5 of the 6 people in the restaurant, some conversation and thoughts about the food would have been nice. When my girlfriend asked for his opinion on two options for desert he simply didn’t give it. The lady in the kitchen cooking luckily helped us with the decision and she was the only one to ask if we even enjoyed the meal.
Admittedly so, my friends were a bit loud and using words that some may not approve of. But being the only table and being adults I think that’s okay.
Lastly, the highly touted “open kitchen.” Yes it is. But okay? You sit so far away it doesn’t matter if it is or not.
The prices are reasonable I suppose for the pasta and pizza but 70-80Qs for a taco is funny.
Also, there was no Spanish menú. I found that strange, as we are in a Spanish speaking country. 3 of us speak both English and Spanish but 2 do not.
