If someone told had told me that my most memorable meal in Antigua, Guatemala would be an Italian dinner, I’d have called them crazy. But this is exactly what happened - we had the best Italian meal outside of Italy right here, at Casa Verona!!
Chef Ivano comes from Italy to give us his homemade pastas, sauces, desserts, and everything else, and each morsel is to die for. Being vegetarian used to mean pasta stuffed with cheese, but the options here were superb. I had a special dish with three types of Ravioli - Spinach & Ricotta, Pumpkin, and Mushroom, all in a Sage Butter sauce. We had a specially-made Fettuccine in Arrabiatta sauce with mushrooms, and our meat-eating friends had the Lasagna (which had a wonderful Béchamel sauce) along with a few more pasta dishes.
The pasta itself was perfect - al dente, but not undercooked. The stuffing was enough to give a wonderful flavor to every dish while still letting the pasta shine and the sauce was always perfectly seasoned. We ended with the Tiramisu and the Panacotta, and - no surprise - they were both superb.
Enhancing the experience was the amazing, attentive and super friendly service by EVERYONE at the restaurant. This is a family-owned establishment and the love shows in every which way! Each person went out of their way to make us feel welcome, gave very useful suggestions and brought everything out with a smile.
Kudos to the team - we felt like we were specially invited guests at their home, and we cannot wait to be back!!
