Spanish Comparisons

Comparisons are used to describe differences or similarities between people, places, or things. Spanish has several simple structures for making comparisons. These structures allow you to say that something is more, less, or equal to something else. Learning comparisons will help you describe preferences, qualities, and differences in everyday conversations.

Lesson 1: Comparing with Más...que

The structure más…que means more…than. It is used when one thing has a greater quality than another.

Structure:
Más + adjective + que

El edificio es más alto que la casa – The building is taller than the house
Este libro es más interesante que el otro – This book is more interesting than the other
El tren es más rápido que el autobús – The train is faster than the bus
La ciudad es más grande que el pueblo – The city is bigger than the town

Lesson 2: Comparing with Menos...que

The structure menos…que means less…than. It is used when something has a smaller degree of a quality.

Structure:
Menos + adjective + que

Esta mochila es menos pesada que la otra – This backpack is less heavy than the other

Lesson 3: Equality with Tan...como

The structure tan…como means as…as. It is used when two things have the same level of a quality.

Tan + adjective + como

Lesson 4: Comparing Quantities

Spanish can also compare quantities using más de, menos de, and tanto…como.

Más de – more than
Menos de – less than
Tanto…como – as much / as many as

La biblioteca tiene menos de veinte mesas – The library has fewer than twenty tables

Lesson 5: Irregular Comparisons

Some comparisons use special irregular forms.

Mejor – better
Peor – worse
Mayor – older / greater
Menor – younger / smaller
